My guess is still the Kindle firmware itself. It is known to choke on some books, for no apparent reason. Unfortunately there is no known fix either

At least I can now relax and not worry that there is something wrong with the files or file system, whatever that is

You are probably right, it's probaly just Kindle itself and I'll just keep converting mobi to mobi before transferring books.
