There is also the problem of making sure both ends of the USB cable are plugged in. The adapter solves that problem since one end plugs into the Kindle and the other into a wall socket. If on the other hand you plug into your computer via a usb connection and accidentally unplug it from the computer (or a cat does by pulling on it as I imagine some do) then you're trying to charge it without it being plugged into the source of power. And with the Adapter it only takes a few short hours for the Kindle to be back at full charge.
