They could cache the images for the 5 books on the front screen. Doesn't take much space, and would behave a lot better.

In any case it is very easy to test. Put 10 books on an SD card and insert it. After a few moments the screen will flash and the processing screen will come up. I haven't looked at the database in 2.1.4 yet, been too busy reading...
