Not if you want to continue to use the Desktop App. If you don't want/need the Desktop App you can up(down)grade back to 1.9.17. Using the Desktop App with the Kobo plugged it and a previous firmware will initiate the update to the next highest firmware. You cannot load books from the Desktop App without first doing the update. I'm pretty sure the designer of this is a some sort of fascist dictator. There's just no reason to be forced to update like this just to load your books on your reader. Especially since the desktop app provides no other functionality between it and your reader other than loading your books and updating the firmware. I've never had a device where I HAD to upgrade the firmware to be able to continue using it. An automatic check yes, automatic forced update, no.
