I don't know what type of display this is but an lcd does not have to have a backlight. A reflective lcd has a mirror behind the lcd panel that reflects ambient light. A transmissive lcd has no mirror but instead a backlight. A transflective lcd is a mixture of the two that can be read in ambient light but has a backlight that can used when it is dark.
