That is a lot of philosophy to infer from/inject into a simple question about the raw number of viewers.

Looking at the Calibre Sub-Forums, Library Management has the largest number of threads *and* the largest number of posts. Plug-ins is fifth in number of threads and fourth in number of posts so it doesn't look like the users are obsessed with it: Of the 134,000 posts in the Forum 9,000 or so concern plug-ins. Even generic conversion issues only reach 11,000, so 85% or so of the activity is totally unrelated in any way to platform transportability.

Rather Calibre Forum users seem mostly concerned with usability.
Hardly a shock with a program that adds features weekly and does content acquisition, management, and distribution.

Calibre is trivial to start using but a bear to master.
Rather like Chess or Go.
