From what I have experience so far with my Sony T1, you have to download the update on a Windows system (which I don't have) and perform the upgrade on an updater program or something (via USB).
It used to annoy me that it couldn't just be a matter of turning on wifi and it auto upgrades, but now, I really appreciate it. I am completely satisfied with how my T1 manipulates books, and have no interest in changing it. It suits my needs as a standalone reader, and I don't use it as a store portal.
As for the Kobo Touch. I have given it to my husband, as it no longer resembles what I purchased last year, and he simply doesn't use wifi or the store links.
