Then how did the files on it get deleted? One possible way is if /dev/mmcbl0p4 somehow was not able to mount. If a mount fails (possibly because there were files in its mount point?) then the startup scripts reformat it as vfat, and repopulate it with default files from /opt (as I recall)...
