My computer got nailed with a bad virus in 2008. It took a couple months to get rid of it completely, with (free) help from the folks at Bleeping Computer (there are other tech sites that will help, too). Since then I changed my antivirus from a well-known brand (that costs $s -- and didn't work) to Avast, installed Malwarebytes (I opted to pay for Premium), installed ZoneAlarm firewall, added NoScript and Cookie Whitelist to Firefox, and installed Secunia (to check for outdated/vulnerable software).
There are 2 programs I use that have no Linux equivalents. Otherwise, I'd be running Ubuntu on my desktop like I do on my netbook. It's not just safer -- it makes more sense, for me, anyway.
