It's a European superstition... for good luck.
Americans will 'knock wood' (actually knock or tap something made of wood.)
Brit's and Aussies will 'touch wood' (actually touch it.)
It's also permitted just to say the words, in hopes that this will work as well, but I don't like to take chances. I look for real wood to use... which isn't always so easy in this day and age of synthetics...
