Because most people (outside of those in Australia and New Zealand) have this absurd idea that the two countries are really (really) close together and that their people are culturally sort of interchangeable.
Yeah .... I know neither statement is true, but a lot of folks out there are geographically ignorant. (A talk-show host here ... Jay Leno does a bit called "Jay-Walking" from time to time, where he quizzes them on things you would think most people would know. Then, he does an in-studio bit called "Jay-Walk Allstars."
Those people (and some of them are TEACHERS in this country) couldn't pick out China on a map of the world ... and one thought that Antarctica was Australia.
