I assume you realize that on the Kobo Touch you can go into the settings and under Reading Life uncheck either Reading Life as a whole or (I assume since I have reading life as a whole off so the option is greyed out on mine) turn off the notifications. If you're reading on the I-pad or other devices I'm not sure if they are as easy to turn off.
Personally I have no use for Reading Life or the Facebook functionality, but as long as I can turn them off I realize there are people that love both of them and Kobo can use that as a marketing gimmick (which if it results in higher sales means more chance of Kobo being around and more resources for firmware development so I can live with it).
