For a start when you tried the 4 corner bypass did you do it correctly? It is ANTI clockwise - top left (under top bar), bottom left, bottom right, top right (under top bar).
Ignoring Google books for a moment, have you tried to download other books - for example from project Gutenberg
http://www.gutenberg.org/ to see if you can do that and load and display them on the reader screen. If you can do that then you need to register with Adobe as outlined by obsessed2 above.
If you can't download and display the project gutenberg books, either directly to your edge or via a PC and usb cable, then you have other problems that must be solved first.
