I now love the opportunities that the iPad gives me for working with pdfs in different ways. There are great apps around for reading text books and academic literature. I recommend giving it a try.
Battery life is pretty good, btw, I can go two-three days without charging. While it's nothing compared to e-ink devices, it really isn't an issue just plugging it in over night.

I rather saw off my penis than buy a iPad.
If I am forced to use LCD based device I will get a professional looking tablet like the Thinkpad tablet. Or even better wait for the Windows 8 tablets to come out in Q3.
