I have set the catalog at 192.168.x.x:8080/opds and all I get is a box that says "downloading HTTP:/calibre etc. for about 2 minutes and then it tells me that it has failed. I've tried rebooting and reloading and reinstalling the app etc but i always get the same thing... any ideas?

P.S. I would prefer not to use calibre2opds if at all possible.
192.168.x.x is local address. It's not available from Internet.
Possiblity of access to your catalog depends on your internet connection type.
Try running ipconfig from command line. Do you see any other address?
(press Win+R, type cmd<enter>, in opened console window, type ipconfig<enter>, look at result).
If you see another address, possible it's your public IP - try to specify it in OPDS catalog settings.
