A reset may fix the sluggish responses, it did on mine. Try the one from the Menu first (Home button, then Menu > Settings > Menu (again) > Restart). If that doesn't work, a hard reset may do the trick. Hold down the power button for twenty seconds (give or take) until the screen flashes several times and brings up the Kindle loading screen. This not only cleared a problem I was having with the store, but also wiped the sluggishness I'd had since I'd first received the device. After that, I was amazed at how snappy it had become.

As for improvements, for me, a little less ghosting (though mine's really minimal), and a bit darker font/more contrast/user adjustable contrast would be nice. Of course, user changeable screensavers and fonts that didn't require a jailbreak would make it damn near perfect. (Right, V, dream on...!)
