For academic purposes you probably want the big eDGe (10" LCD and 9.7" e-ink screens -- if I remember right!
). The problem with being discontinued is there is no support from the manufacturer, and any further upgrades will have to come from the user community (see the forum here on MobileRead under Android).
There are some very smart people still working on/with the devices and willing to answer questions. I don't know whether that's enough for you.
I'm very happy with both of my eDGes, but wish some good company had picked up the concept and was working to make them faster, lighter, and even better. I have yet to see another device I like as much.
