The screen have a glass substrate that is susceptible to shock and stress damage. You're most likely to damage the kindle screen by dropping it or sitting on it. A thin film will do nothing for that.
Actually, it will scratch. I managed to drop mine down between the seat and the wall of an airplane and something put a couple of gouges in the plastic of the screen. Thankfully, they're not that noticeable, but you can damage it.
