The screen protector is just insurance, and it was FREE. My old PRS-505 has been in a case from Day 1, but I still have a 1/2" scratch on it and I have NO CLUE how it got there.

While subjective, I don't notice any reduction in screen clarity - transmissivity seems to be near 100%. The only downside is that it's a bit more "shiny" than the matte screen underneath.
