Our wish list: we want an affordable but good hotel. We're not expecting it to be four star, as long as it's clean and the staff is friendly we're happy. It doesn't have to be right in the city centre, we won't mind walking a maximum 20 minutes or so to get there. We also like to have easy access to public transport for when the weather's not nice or if we want to visit something a bit further from the hotel. Free internet access (not necessarily in the room) would be a big bonus.

When I was planning my trip to Scotland in June (at the last minute of course and with verylittle time to spend on it), tripadvisor and booking.com proved the best help. That and the Scottish Tourist Board, of course in your case it would be the Irish Tourist Board I suppose. But really if I had to use only one source, it would be booking.com, you can search for hotels, locate them on a map, see the reviews, check availability and book online (with a credit card). Everything in one place, very easy to use and efficient.
