its IR touch. you can use your fingernail if you want. or gloved fingers etc.
there are plenty of good uses for the keyboard. taking notes , searching for something on device, searching for something in the store, entering web addresses in the browser etc.

the battey is also half the size so the device weighs less
and you are still missing the point. with an eink ereader you can turn it on and leave it on. never shut it off and you will get a week of life out of it. turn on and leave on an lcd device with an equivalent battery and it wont last the day
