For it's first few years when it basically had no competition, I don't think they really cared all that much. Now that they don't have a stranglehold on the ereader market like they once did, they do have to make changes in order to maintain their position .
It's a reactionary move , no doubt. As is coming out with an ereader tablet similiar to the nook color.

Which is all to the good - competition keeps them on their toes and benefits everyone.
I'm sure Amazon would prefer to be the only game in town, but that benefits no one but them.
I hope the Sony T1 proves popular enough that it forces them to provide library integration and more open access, too.
Since the *reading* experience is pretty much the same on all e-ink readers, it's the *user* experience that needs to be enhanced from reader to reader to keep things interesting - where and how one gets one's books and how easy and/or expensive that acquisition process is.
