I will do some testing this afternoon to come up with some more info! As mentioned above, my comment wasn't meant as an issue report.

quisvir good job, the only problematic part is having to edit asset xml files (which were supposed to be "translate once and forget", the rest was supposed to come from PRS+ translation spreadsheet). Hopefully there should be a way to inject those into "strings" object (initialized from assets.xml), so that we could keep these strings in the spreadsheet.
I'll see if I can find a way to avoid the asset xml files. I was hoping to avoid the xml's completely from the beginning, but I couldn't figure out the xml injection functions used by kbook.xs.

Another thing is, there is already 'mark" for 300, that is always manual (allows to assign up to 5 (?) subicons to a book) which I planned to implement for other models. On x50, the default feature is more of a "book opened"/"is new" than "read"/"unread".
Sorry, I hadn't seen that addon! However, using the .opened property did seem like a sensible method to use, since the reader itself calls the collection 'Unread Books'. Also, I've seen a good number of people frustrated by the sony's behaviour of removing the 'new' label as soon as a book is opened once. But I gladly leave the decision to you
