I was already paying for a $20 data plan on my feature phone (check email, browse text-heavy sites, etc) prior to getting an iPhone so the required data plan isn't a big deal. Since I frequently use my phone where I don't have WiFi, I would have paid for a data plan either way. Have to admit, though, my feature phone was way better for calls despite both being on AT&T.
By the way, non-smartphone Android devices already exist. Unfortunately, they're usually either $400+ tablets, really old 1.5 Cupcakes or Chinese no-names.
