There is a HUGE river bed between my house and metro Kyoto. Perhaps a full kilometer across. But usually the actually 'river' is no more than a hundred meters across... until the rains come. Then the whole thing fills from bank to bank, looking like a kayaking course! A day later it's back to being a gentle little stream.
