I pretty much use only interchangeable needles now, whether I'm knitting flat or in-the-round. I bought plenty of extra cables and some extra tips in the sizes I use most, and when I get too many projects on the needles I go back and remove the needle tips and put the little caps on the ends of the cables. It's helped a lot -- I pretty much can always find the sizes I need now without having to buy more needles. (My favorite ones are the Knitpicks nickel-plated tips, although I've got the wooden tips too.)
I've got them too and it's nearly solved the problem, but this time I'm knitting wrist warmers and there's not enough stitches for even the smallest cable - perish the thought that I would have to sew anything up.
