I'd really so much rather be reading than buying. But sometimes I can't read and when I can't read at all, buying FEELS kind of like reading. It's...like...a statement of intention to read. Quiet heady, really.

I know exactly what you mean! When things get really ugly at work, and I'm being worn down .... my attention (and fingers) stray to my list of "To Be Purchased" ebooks - and I feel I really do deserve to buy another one - I really want to be reading a book, not enduring another crappy day at work.
