The gentleman's rule is: No brown in town. Brown shoes are for the tweeds worn in the country. Black is with black only, same is true for grey slacks. Italians wear grey flanell slacks with brown shoes so you have to make up your mind if you are an English gentleman or an Italian gigolo
Grey and brown is ok but no formall wear, if working in a bank for example it is a no-no.
