Many devices now support something called DLNA, for streaming from media devices, or computers, to other media devices or computers. I use it all the time. I have a 1 terabyte hard drive on my desktop that I store podcasts, movies, and TV shows on, and using a program called miniDLNA, I have it streamed to the TVs in my house. It works out quite nice, I make a copy of my DVDs and such and put them away so they're not taking up a bunch of room in my apartment, and just pull them up where ever I want. Also is cool, since I have a TV tuner card, I can have my computer be a TV, recording what I want, and not be restricted on where I watch it. Hell, there are times I tunnel in to my home network and stream stuff from there while at work.

In the case of the iPad, you can buy stuff from iTunes, and stream it to your TV as well using the same sort of system. Not to mention that there are ways to use it as a universal remote.
