After several experiences, I liked Canon G10 best, so DSLR camera is prefered. And we plan to stick with it for a long time, too. So my brother said he'd get EOS 500D.

IMO, your suggestion of SD 4000 IS sounds nice, though 3.8x zoom is too low. What about Canon IXUS 210 IS? 5x zoom should be better. When I grow up I want to have 2 cameras: one compact and one DSLR. I'll take a closer look at IXUS then.
