I've read a fair number of books this year. For me the stand outs have been:

Connie Willis' Blackout/All Clear

Greg Bear's Hull Zero-Three

Brent Weeks' The Black Prism

The Black Prism was a surprise. I had no reason to think it would be anything but run-of-the-mill fantasy. Boy was I wrong. It's too easy to spoil the surprises by talking about the plot but I'm willing to bet that most people reading this would not be disappointed.
