But if you rely heavily on PDF or that format is important for you, a Sony is a better alternative; in my opinion, Sony ereaders are better for PDFs.

But overall, I like and prefer the Kindle. It's not just a good device supported by a big online bookstore but has a very competitive price than Sony can't beat.

I would take Nook 1st gen. out of the question. No native PDF support, poor battery life and even when you can use it there, was marketed for USA customers so buying books can be a problem if you don't have a valid USA address or credit card.

First off Joe you just need to stop posting anything about the Nook, you inital biased and hatred towards Barnes and Noble is really getting to be too much. People come on here looking for help not your biased distortions.
The 1st generation Nook most certainly does natively support PDF's and I have many novels in PDF's on my 1st Gen. Nook that came out fantastic and has text reflow, where the Nook's PDF's fall short is more in manuals and other Text Book type of docs and maps and such. For novels it's actually quite nice, So please stop, you do this all the time and I for one , am EXTREMELY tired of your distortions.

Also you can buy books anywhere on the nook that sells, PDF's and ePUb so again Joe your little "ommissions" just lead to confusion. To the OP - it's only buying books directly from Barnes and Noble where you need an American Address. Any online bookstore that sells your books in ePUb format or PDF format you are all set.

But to answer to the OP go with the Sony, it'll have the strongest international Support.
