In answer to your publish date question, there is a tweak in preferences -> tweaks to set the date format. However this only takes full effect on the edit metadata dialog. On the library view itself last time I checked it will always use month and year even if you only put year in the tweak. That is hardcoded into the program and I suspect it is because of the requirements of the date picker.
It doesn't hugely bother me since I have got used to double clicking on the year part before typing. And if you have a situation of multiple books in that year you can ensure sort order by using the month.
