That would sound strange had not my grandmother owned a cat who would ring the doorbell when it it wanted in. The first few times it happened, they thought some kid was playing games. Then they noticed that every time they opened the door to see who rang the bell, the cat would come in. I believe they finally saw the cat actually ringing it.
Evidently the cat had seen others ring the bell and made the connection on his own.
