I didn't know what time the dogs came around in the morning but the tightly tied trash bags were in the sun. By the time that the dogs would have bit into them their sensitive noses would have gotten a blast of ammonium fumes up the snoot.
It was VERY effective and I doubt that it would have done permanent damage as it would have been just to vapors and not the actual liquid that got them.

Mothballs can work too. When I see neighbors walking their dogs and not picking up after them in my yard, I'll lay out a line of mothballs along the curb in the grass. Dogs will sniff & move on to the next yard.
