A solution
Solved in myself.
Found a tiny program (56K) called Freeeject at freeeject.com and put it in my C: drive
made a bat file with:
C:/freeeject M:
C:/freeeject J:
exit
and put a shortcut to it on my desktop with a keyboard shortcut.
J & M are the letters that were assigned to my Nook and SD card by Windows.
This instantly (and I assume safely) ejects them.
I assume that the program is totally harmless.
I'm also assuming that it's better to eject the drives first, though perhaps this isn't necessary in which case all of the above is unnecessary.
