I find that distracting as well. There are a few mounting systems aside from the hinge system that don't have visible stuff over the Kindle, but I don't think any of them are quite as nicely done as the hinge method. I have a case by "Speck" that has a plastic mount the Kindle sits upon, but the mount is plasticky and adds bulk.

There is one with a bottom mount that recently came out that looks interesting, made by Incipio [link]. I would even consider buying it, but the interior colors appear similar to my Amazon cover so it wouldn't present much in the way of variety.
