Write more true stand-alone novels. But if you must write a series... at least make each book in the series stand on it's own merits. And always remember... that to leave a reader "swinging in the wind" at the end of one book in a series takes no literary talent. Entice me to read the next installment in your series with your amazing prose and your fascinating characters, not with the "dangling" of a marketing carrot. That cheapens your work.

In my books, the plot, conflict and issues are resolved at the end. Beginning, middle and an end. The last short chapter is the lead in for the next novel, to give a hint of what's coming. And the end of book two the last sentence is the lead in to the final book which will have a conclusion that ties the consequences from all three together.
I know the evil you speak of, and I refuse to subscribe to it.
