What I suspect is going on there is circuit board placement of the plug.

If the female receptacle is soldered onto the bottom of a circuit board (as seen from the user's perspective) it would put the plug upside-down, versus soldering to the top of the board.

Combine that with manufacturers looking for the best deals on components and the possibility there is only one type of socket available (bottom solder or top solder with no choice of the opposite).
