Wrong? Who can say what's right or wrong?
Dangerous to whom? If a belief is dangerous to unbelievers, then believers are not following Juarez's advice about respecting non-believers.
About the OP, I think that if somebody or something is cherished to some people (name it, Christ, Buddha, Mohammed, the cross, the crescent moon, etc.), then I don't understand why people who don't respect the cherished thing, later got surprised by the reaction to their deeds.
