I just got a 4G Touch and own a 2G as well. The 4G has a much sharper screen but I couldn't call it huge advantage over the 2G. In iBooks, at the smallest font on the 2G paring with the 4G (which has 2 smaller fonts one is really, really small) I really couldn't see that much difference both are readable. The newer model has a better white background which helps.
The viewing angle on the 4G is actually worse than the 2G. You really need to be looking at it front on but then it really shines.
You could probably get an older Touch for 1/3 the price of a new one which would make it very attractive. The advantage on the 4G is its noticeably faster, and the new features added but since both can do iOS 4.1 very little if any software wouldn't be usable on the 2G/3G model. The camera isn't that great but will work for quick snaps of stuff. The video recording though is very nice.
