And yes, it's actually a lot more bother to open up the back of the K1, get the card out, plug it into the computer, transfer files, plug it back into the K1, put the back cover back on, and put it back in its case, than it is just to plug in the USB cable.

If you've got PDF-files stored as images and not text they're going to be a lot larger than just 500k.

i really don't see the disadvantage of connecting to either a desktop or a laptop since you'd have to use a computer to put the books on the card anyway.
