To put it into perspective, it's about the same weight as the typical hardback book. True, you can't read outside but, on the other side of the coin, you can't read on the Kindle in poor light, a situation for which the backlit iPad is excellent. You'll only get eyestrain if you have the brightness set too high; turn it down to the minimum level at which you can still comfortably read the page.

But it's not a case of "one or the other". I have both an iPad and a Kindle, and use each in the circumstances for which it's best suited.
