Ironically, this is a common argument against the iPad. The lack of Flash support, disallowing SIM card swapping for 3G service providers, not providing a slot for external storage... these are all design choices Apple made.
Amazon should have released KDK earlier, no doubt. However, if history provides any lesson here, it's that the next version of iPad hardware will be different than the current (first) generation, and anyone who bought the first iPhone or the 3G (before the 3GS) can attest to this frustration. Apple's lucrative business model with gadgets seems to be get them out fast, and change as much with every generation as you can get away with. Granted, they can't afford to have too many prototyping cycles lest the leaks from their Chinese sweatshops make it easy for Apple ripoffs to make it to market before Apple does.
