That is correct from what I have read, but if it doesn't support annotating, I can't justify to myself as a useful school purchase...although it would be nice to have

It currently has the best screen on the market. I belive that it can be rotated so that the buttons are on the left hand side. It is lightweight so easy to hold and small enough to fit into a coat pocket. While it does not have a replaceable battery, it is suppose to last one month on a charge.
You can choose the 3G with WiFi model or the WiFi model only. Both would work well for you if you have a WiFi hotspot in your house. The 3G version uses AT&T.

I have thought of the Kindle 3, and I love the look of it, but it's currently sold out. Being attached to Amazon is nice because you get the benefit of their bookstore, but at the same time, I don't want to be tied down to one place.
A replaceable battery is greatly desired, but I suppose if needed I could go without.

The closest thing to what you want is the PRS900.
The biggest problem with it is the quality of the screen. There is some glare and the contrast is not as good as one would wish. How much that bothers you is a matter of subjective preference - you will find people here telling you the screen is totally unacceptable, and others - like me - saying that it really doesn't bother them.
My suggestion would be to try to find a PRS900 in some store. If you find the screen acceptable, then you found your reader.

I was thinking the same thing; I understand fully that not all of my desires may be met, but if many of them were, I would be happy

. I like everything about the Sony, minus the screen, and agree that I would most likely have to see one in-store first. Anyone know who carries them? I didn't see any in Wal-Mart, and my closest Best Buy is in Erie, PA (Two hours from me and across Lake Erie is Canada :P)

IREX DR800SG. a super ereader. you should really consider this device.
i've got them both, because the eDGe is in my use not an ereader. the eDGe is great for all kinds of things. the best i find is the combo of an ereader and a LCD-screen.
the IREX is a ereader. we, my wife and myself, are reading with it and i can make all kinds of annotations. there are several possibilities of extra software on the reader, but annotations and reader is our thing. the eDGe has just much more to offer in sense of internet access and email etc. it's just much more than a reader and therefore also a bit heavier.

I'm a little wary to purchase IREX; I realize they may be good devices, and the company may very well be in good sound hands under new management, but until I hear this personally from a recent user, I'm a little gun-shy

.
Could you please PM me...or post here for aiding others...and tell me a bit more about your likes and dislikes with both readers? The Edge really does seem impressive, and I like that it folds onto itself. I'm open to hearing what anyone has to say, thank you.
