Kindle FBReader is coming soon ...

I asked the guy from FBReader.org about a general (standard Java compatible) FBReaderJ Java application so I could adjust it to my Kindle and the surprising answer was:

FBReader for Kindle coming soon!
-- Arseny

These are great news - I can't wait to read my epubs on my Kindle

Okay, I'll ask.

Joblack, what is "FBReader" and why should I be so excited?

I'm not being facetious, I"m not familiar with the reader.

This is excellent news! FBReader supports several file formats including epub. FBReader also has configuration options that the Amazon reader does not like an option to control text justification.

Wow, that would be great, let me get this straight, I could then read my FB2 formatted ebooks on the Kindle 3?

This is actually the kind of stuff that would make the Kindle 3 superior to any other ereader, I love my Pocket Pro because of the LBook firmware and the different fonts, etc. you can select with CoolReader, I wonder how that is all going to come across on the Kindle...if at all...

You should be so excited because of the supported formats:

OUT-FREAKING-STANDING!!! FBReader is hands down my favorite reading software and it's maybe the biggest thing I don't like about my Kindle....I would be thrilled to see it as a Kindle app...very curious how they will handle a lot of the features in FBReader that I love.

not sure FBReader handles DRM content...but I haven't stayed up to speed these days with me not being 100% most of the year. cool if it has been added but I doubt it.

BTW, someone ported FBReader for the Pocketbook readers so if you visit that forum here on MR you can read some of the features and issues of FBReader on an EPD device...one of it's strengths is the ability to organize your content and use metadata for real unlike how the Kindle completely ignores the data for some reason.

but if I could use FBReader on my Kindle I would likely take the time to dedrm all my Kindle content so I could use it in FBReader rather than using the native stuff in the Kindle.

I don't know the kindlefix app but you can read decrypted epubs. Encrypted epubs aren't working but there is nothing a little bit of cabbage couldn't solve.

Yeah, and unfortunately it doesn't play DRMed mobi files either, so we can't read books purchased from amazon either. Still, would be great to read epubs natively.

Well that's not a technical but a legal problem.

Oh? I didn't think anything could play the DRMed files. There are programs that can remove the DRM through a vulnerability if you load the book into kindle for windows, but only kindles can play them directly. If it's a legal problem, they can release that library or whatever outside of the USA so it's not bound by the DMCA. That would be awesome.

The is a second program (I think it was called skindle) which is a C program and doesn't need Kindle for Windows. I think after decrypting the file it is readable with the FBReader.
