iriver Story on pre-order now - 290 USD aprox

iriver is now accepting orders for its ebook reader. Shipping is for October 6th. The price is not that good, but at least they include many extras (SD card, case, 2 free book downloads). One of the interesting things is that the menu is available in 15 languages, so I think that they will launch overseas soon.

Check the link for more info:

Oh great day that thing is uglier than the Kindle! And here I had such high hopes. I really like iRiver's MP3 players.

You should better check out the page turning and startup from standby.

http://tvpot.daum.net/v/18335373
about 3 seconds to turn the next page.

http://tvpot.daum.net/v/18335374
about 6~9 seconds startup from standby with half of text.

Wikipedia says they changed the spelling from iRiver to iriver.

they were the first company to market the mp3. goes to show that the first mover often doesn't get the spoils of the risk and initial costs. they didn't create an ecosystem for the product. they didn't support it. they treated it like a commodity before it was. could have cornered the market. oh well.

I thought Diamond Multimedia's RIO players were first.
I bought one of those in about 1998 or 1999.

I would have said almost as ugly, not uglier.

In the pics, the device seems pretty sleek, but I'm not convinced commiting to all that extra real estate for a dedicated keyboard is a good thing. And the lack of FB2 support is very disappointing, unless it's possible to port and install something like FBReader or CoolReader. I'd consider it if the FB2 support was possible (maybe OI will be a future alternative?).

There was one or two before that, but it was the first to have any sales success.

Iirc iriver showed up about a year later, their first mp3 players were cd-based.

USD 290 for this? Seems they are about a year too late to the party, this time. This would sell at 190.

If it's got decent note-taking and search ability, AND reflowable PDFs, it could work at $290. It'd fit about the niche of the Sony 600, without the touchscreen that a lot of people don't like.

If it's got decent MP3 ability, or wifi, that'd definitely make people more interested.
