Oliphant, Margaret: Diana Trelawny, v1. 13 Aug 2009
Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a popular Scottish writer. A widow who became the bread winner for her extended family, she was very prolific and wrote in a wide variety of genres.
'Diana Trelawny' is one of Oliphant's shortest novels. The heroine is a wealthy land owner, devoting her life to generous acts to her less fortunate neighbours. Her active life and strong-minded outlook inclines her to consider marriage as undesirable. However, when she follows her friends to Italy for a holiday, she encounters a handsome Count who stirs memories of a passion from her earlier life. Will she succumb to this new influence?
