Treo 670 running Windows Mobile - for real!

More photos posted in this thread.

Looks like it might be for real. Palm Addicts points us to an Engadget article with video. I couldn't get it to play on my pc, but am curious what people think about it. Can it be a fake video?

Very interesting...

roc a fella is the source and Engadget credited him rightfully. The folks over at Engadget should have pointed to the real source of the scoop: Howardforums -Alex

They are encoded in Quicktime/3GPP Profile 2. I made some screenshots of the vids, which don't look much better better than the video itself

Doesn't look fake to me!! Btw the real source is here:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=695760

Wish Engadget had not forgotten to mention that... they even renamed the videos with their name in it... pfui!

Peter contacted me and explained to me how the news came to Engadget. Obviously it is roc a fella and not Howard Forums or any other community who is the source of this leak and should deserve all the credits - as done by Engadget. My apology.

I have a single question... If it's real, why is it a Verizon phone? Why wouldn't it just be a developer's version, instead of a Verizon one? If they've gotten to the point where they're branding and shipping these phones, why is a fuzzy video all we have to show for it?

Let's recap this for a second...

Palm Treo running WM 2005 (premise) + Palm switching to WM in future (assumption) => Palm OS dead + PalmSource dead (conclusion).

PalmSource would not receive enough income anymore through license fees to finance its R&D for Palm Linux. Plus they would have to start from the beginning looking for prominent licensees. No chance!

Let's not count out PalmSource and PalmOS so fast. Even if Palm moves to Win Mobile (I'm still skeptical, but it's possible), that doesn't mean the jig is up for PalmOS.

In the SmartPhone and traditional PDA world, they may suffer, but I think feature phones is where they're headed. It makes sense. Why else would they be willing to make a public comment about no Cobalt development right about the time they release info about the LG contract? And if they do well with feature phones on PalmOS for Linux, there's no reason why they couldn't expand back out to pdas and smartphones.

A Win Mobile Treo doesn't mean Palm quits PalmOS completely. Especially if Jeff Hawkins is still on board (is he?) -- that alone would make you think they'd be very reluctant to ditch PalmOS completely. I just think Palm has to hedge their bets. I would have guessed Linux rather than Win Mobile, but Win Mobile probably has a better corporate following, and requires less work to adopt. I don't think they'll dump PalmOS until there's absolutely no other choice. And one working Treo with Windows Mobile doesn't mean they made the decision... I bet they were working on that as part of their exploration of other options anyway. Or it could even be a few industrious employees who saw a mountain and wanted to climb it for the thrill of the climb!

The fact of the matter is that Palm is dead if they DONT releast a new Treo. Its the Treo even keeping them afloat. Smart business move, especially if its keeps them afloat until the linux os is ready. JMHO

Actually, Engadget got the news directly from the person that posted the information on HowardForums.

From Engadget: ...roc a fella himself just emailed us a video...

Take care,

I think this video shows that the Treo 670 can run WM 2005, but it doesn't prove that it will run it.

you are right about the key guard. Honestly I don't understand it myself.

This unit is production by no means. The back of it shows DVT sample not for resale.

What exactly is key guard?

Kudos to you, roc, for this wonderful revelation. Treo running WM. I am still overwhelmed by this news.

its that (pardon my bluntness) supid button in the middle (looks like a odd shapped rectangle) with the button in teh center.

I've seen it on all palm devices but never on a WM device. I think that either it will be transitioned into the WM platform or carried over to cobalt.

BTW I **will** have a cobalt version later next week.

My thoughts exactly. There's no doubt that the Treo's hardware can, indeed, run Windows Mobile. It isn't that difficult to make Windows CE run on a handheld device, just like it isn't difficult to make Windows XP run on a desktop computer. (I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pre-production LifeDrive or T|5 running WM.)

I'm still skeptical as to whether Palm will actually release this WM-powered Treo. I'll believe it when I see the press release.

Anyway, this is a great scoop roc a fella.
