The Limits of Pleasure by Rainbow Award-finalist writer and literary translator Daniel M. Jaffe (ISFDB, UCLA Extension faculty profile) is his contemporary literary personal identity self-discovery drama novel with strong spiritual and erotic (and possibly romantic, but be warned that some of the sex scene content may be unorthodox and not necessarily lead to an HEA for the characters) elements, starring a gay Jewish man raised by his Holocaust survivor grandmother and after her death goes on a trip to try and reconcile both sides of his identity, taking a detour into various forms of exploration and experimentation which nevertheless leaves him unfulfilled until he encounters someone else suffering from much the same sort of personal dichotomy between cultural heritage, faith, and sexuality, free courtesy of LGBT specialty publisher Lethe Press (Wikipedia), who are e-printing it from its 2001 Harrington Park Press edition.

This seems to have garnered a fair amount of praise over the years, including being a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year finalist and an entry in The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Multiethnic American Literature series.

A year after the death of his Holocaust-surviving grandmother, Dave leaves Boston for Amsterdam, the home of Anne Frank, whom his Grandma revered. Dave, feeling undeserving to confront the suffering that Grandma endured in the concentration camps, cannot bring himself to visit Anne Frank’s house.

Angry at himself and the world, Dave repeatedly seeks out risky erotic trysts that mix sacred ritual with profane hedonism. Then he meets Alexander, a sexually reserved Dutchman of Indonesian heritage, who has identity conflicts of his own. The relationship shakes both men’s lives to their core.
